Survey Shows Living Rooms, Kitchens and Bedrooms Painted Most Often

TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2014 – Canadians take their home entertaining seriously. According to a country-wide survey of Canadian painting habits conducted by leading brand CIL® paint, living rooms and kitchens – the most popular rooms for welcoming guests – are among the top of the list when it comes to most frequently painted rooms.

The survey, which polled a sampling of managers across the country where CIL brand paints are sold, found that in the previous 18 months, 23 per cent of customers gave their living room walls a fresh coat of paint while 22 per cent painted their kitchens.

"Based on the survey results, it seems Canadians want to put their best foot forward when entertaining in their home, and that includes decking their walls with paint," said Alison Goldman, brand manager for CIL paint, a brand of PPG Architectural Coatings US and Canada.

At the same time, they want balance in their lives, she added, noting that the bedroom came first in the survey at 24 per cent. "What this demonstrates is that, while we’re a hospitable bunch, Canadians also want a feel-good room to retreat to at the end of a sociable day."

Interestingly, only two per cent of survey respondents said they recently painted their dining rooms, reflecting a growing trend towards entertaining in less formal spaces, Goldman said. "Guests often end up gathering in the kitchen, and living areas are being increasingly designed as open concept spaces connecting to the kitchen, so it’s not surprising that this is where homeowners are focusing their paint efforts."

With holiday time approaching, Goldman offered these tips to add cheer to your home’s most-used rooms.

Spread joy through colour. The holidays are an ideal time to introduce splashes of colour into your décor, she said, especially for those typically hesitant to do so. Simply paint an accent wall with one of this season’s trending colours to transform a room from ordinary to extraordinary. Recommended colours of CIL paint include Indian Summer (30YR 26/330) orange or Jade Frost (50GY 53/033) green for the kitchen, and Hidden Harbor (70BG 32/238) blue or Soft Wine (30RR 49/067 SE02) violet for living areas.

Paint a holiday memory. Think back to your childhood holidays to find colour inspiration for your rooms. If you enjoyed building gingerbread houses, for example, paint your walls a warm brown – such as Natural Cashmere (70YR 39/154) by CIL paint – and bring out pops of green, pink and yellow through pillows, throw rugs and other accessories. Or, if decorating trees with tinsel evokes fond memories, try a metallic-like tone, such as Silver Trophy (30BB 53/012) by CIL paint, on your walls.

Create a winter wonderland
. A wintry white theme highlighted with silver and blue accents never goes out of style. Give walls a fresh coat of neutral paint and glitz up your room with sparkling metallic or crystal accessories. Top neutral colours by CIL paint recommended for the season include Drifting Snow (10BB 83/014 SE51) and Winter Bird (30YY 78/018 DL50).

Break with tradition. Have some fun with your home décor this holiday by combining brilliant colours you typically see on gift wrap, ornaments and other decorations. Consider striking colour combinations such as deep purple and burnt orange, brown and pink, or blue and gold. For example, use alternating blocks of contrasting paint colours to make a kitchen backsplash pop and add extra punch by picking up on the same colours in table linens, place settings, candles and other accessories.

"The best part of painting for the holidays is not only that you get to enjoy the décor even once the party is put away, but that you will also be ready for your next big event," Goldman said.
