The Government of Canada has indicated that infrastructure investments are focused on achieving three core objectives: Promoting economic growth, job creation and competitiveness; tackling climate change and increasing resilience; and improving social inclusion and quality of life for all Canadians.
The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada, together with the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating, provided a submission recommending that retrofits, regulatory harmonization and skilled trades be a core aspect of the National Infrastructure Assessment in order to support the federal government in achieving each of these objectives.
The submission recommends that the following themes be paramount in the development of an infrastructure vision for Canada:
- Assessing Canada’s infrastructure needs and establishing a long-term vision;
- Achieving net-zero emissions – investing in retrofits;
- Improving coordination between owners and funders; and
- Governance of the National Infrastructure Assessment.
