Time's running out to apply for the 2017 CEC and Federated Insurance Scholarship. The deadline to apply is this Friday! If your company has an employee who has a son or daughter currently studying to be in the mechanical contracting industry, or if you're a member of an MCA student chapter, this scholarship can help. CEC and Federated Insurance have partnered on this intiative for 12 years now. For more information, download the scholarship criteria and the scholarship application. You can also contact Tania Johnston at 613-232-5169 or tania@mcac.ca.

Bill S-224, the Canada Prompt Payment Act, is going to the House of Commons for review and consideration by Members of Parliament. MCA Canada, together with the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada, has been working hard to get this bill passed in the Senate. We now need your help to get it passed in the House of Commons. Please use our tool to write to your Member of Parliament seeking their support for this very important piece of legislation. Simply go to www.promptpayment.ca, fill in a few details and click send. It’s as easy as that! MCA Canada and the NTCCC will continue to lobby on your behalf on Parliament Hill to get this bill passed!

Great news. The Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada (MSCC) has agreed to further suspended the $75 fee for the MSCC Gold Standard Certified Technicians exam until the end of the year. Your service journeymen can register to take the exam at no cost. Simply email the MSCC office, include the list of techs to take the exam and send it directly to daryl@mcac.ca. Isn't it time you made the leap to truly differentiate your company from the rest?

INDUSTRY NEWS

As part of the Government of Canada's Investing in Canada plan, the Canada Infrastructure Bank is a new tool that municipalities could use to build more infrastructure in communities across Canada. The Bank would be an additional way to build new infrastructure by attracting private sector and institutional investors to support the transformational infrastructure that Canadian communities need. If approved by Parliament, the Bank would invest $35 billion from the federal government into transformative infrastructure projects. $15 billion would be sourced from the over $180 billion Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, including:

- $5 billion for public transit systems;
- $5 billion for trade and transportation corridors; and,
- $5 billion for green infrastructure projects, including those that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, deliver clean air and safe water systems, and promote renewable power.

Capital spending on non-residential tangible assets is anticipated to edge up 0.8% in 2017, following two consecutive annual declines. Public and private sector organizations anticipate spending $240.5 billion on non-residential tangible capital assets in 2017, edging up 0.8% from 2016. Among the 20 industrial sectors, 7 anticipate higher spending on non-residential tangible capital assets in 2017. The largest increase is projected in the public administration sector, where spending is expected to rise from $32.3 billion in 2016 to $35.5 billion in 2017.

LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION & TRAINING

It’s back! The Construction Education Council is pleased to announce fall dates for its always-popular Project Management for Contractors course. The highly acclaimed Gold Seal and Blue Seal accredited program is offered in partnership with the University of Waterloo. It takes place over a 10-day period and is split into two five-day sessions. To date, nearly 900 managers have graduated from the program. Week one of the program is scheduled for November 16-20; week two is booked for December 7-11. This program always sells out, so don’t delay. Register today.

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

Like many of today's household devices, modern infrastructure is gaining the ability to collect and exchange valuable data using wireless devices that monitor the health of buildings and bridges, for example, in real time. But wireless systems for underground infrastructure, such as utility pipelines, are much more difficult to test in the field, especially during rare and extreme events such as earthquakes.
