ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Reaching Your Peak Performance!

Join us from September 19 to 22 at the incredible Westin Whistler Resort and Spa high in the Coastal Mountains. Fall amongst the mountains is a season of glorious colour with a unique, laid-back pace. Seasons only change for the better and fall is no exception with its own festivals, specials, and activities that are best enjoyed while the leaves turn.

Incredible views are everywhere. Your conference will include shopping, fine dining, nightlife, and amazing adventures. Try your hand at canoeing, biking, or hiking along the unlimited trails. Perhaps, you truly adventurous types will try rock climbing and whitewater rafting. If motorsports are more your speed, there are ATV tours, jet boats, 4 x 4 tours, or helicopter excursions. Perhaps your speed is more casual, then visit the incredible Scandinave Spa or test your patience at one the many world-class golf courses.

If you’ve been with us before, you know not to miss this event. If you haven’t been to one of our conferences, mark your calendar now. Register today!

While you're at it, remember to book your hotel room at just $209 per night.

As our national conference approaches, we would like to take the opportunity to recognize those companies who are celebrating their 100th year in business in 2018. Download the submission form and send it in to the MCA Canada office.

The Doug Crawford Memorial Award recognizes an individual, individuals or company who has made a significant contribution to MCA Canada through long-standing voluntary participation, leadership, and tireless commitment to ensuring the success of our associate members.

Member Update

MCA Canada is asking members to complete a short survey about their basic corporate information. It would help us immensely if as many members as possible were to complete this survey—it's just six questions long! We will use the data we collect as feedback and input into the programs and services we offer to our members. Help us help you!

As a result of this month’s annual general meeting, MCA Alberta is pleased to announce its Board of Directors for 2018–19.

INDUSTRY NEWS

BDC analyzed data from almost 950,000 Canadian businesses to find out what distinguishes top-performing companies, and what entrepreneurs can do to build world-class businesses.

Statistics Canada has released the most recent numbers for apprenticeship, reveling registration has declined in every province and territory. The numbers have industry stakeholders concerned, reiterating the message that significant changes need to be made to fill the looming skills gap.

The role of women in the workforce has changed significantly in the last several decades, but while it’s now commonplace to work alongside female doctors and lawyers, one field still lags: the trades. But there are many skilled women out there working to change that.

KickAss Careers is a school and community outreach program with a goal of engaging, educating, and encouraging young men and women to consider careers in the mechanical, industrial, technology, construction, and advanced manufacturing industries.

LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION & TRAINING

Are you signed up to play in CEC's Golf Tournament? If not, what are you waiting for? Registration is open for the annual fundraiser, and it's always a great time. Play this year is at the Royal Ontario Golf Club in Milton, Ontario on July 11. As always, all proceeds from the event go to support CEC’s ability to provide the mechanical contracting industry with innovative education programming. Learn more at CEC's website, or by contacting Tania Johnston at 613-232-5169 or tania@mcac.ca.

Each week CEC will highlight a scholarship sponsor leading up to the July 31 cut-off date for submissions.

Bradford White Canada is pleased to offer a $1,500 scholarship to an MCA student chapter member or the son or daughter of a member company employee, who is studying in the mechanical or a related construction field, business management or computer science.

To apply for the Bradford White Canada scholarship—and to see a full list of other scholarships available—please visit www.constructioneducation.ca or contact the CEC office at 613-232-5169.

As part of the CEC legal webinar series, Dan Leduc of Norton Rose Fulbright will present a free webinar to MCA Canada members on tender law. Since 2010, contractor legal rights regarding tenders have limited, yet the sense is that bid shopping and other unseemly experiences have not been reduced. This seminar will review what legal rights you, as a subcontractor, might still have.

Date: June 21
Time: 12:00 p.m. Eastern
Cost: Free to all MCAC members

To register, visit www.constructioneducation.ca.

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

An army of 6,000 construction workers is hard at work at a large site overlooking the conflux of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers in the south-western Chinese megacity of Chongqing. No landmark development in China is complete without a world record, and Raffles City Chongqing has the highest skybridge linking the most towers. With an adjacent pair of towers connected by smaller skybridges, workers and residents can move around the eight-tower development without needing to return to ground level A “horizontal skyscraper” 300m in length, stretching across four of the main towers at the 42nd floor. With the building situated in an earthquake zone, it “floats” on top of the towers to create the necessary sway.

Bassem Hamdy and Ron Goldshmidt explain how blockchain can create a comprehensive record of construction and building activity and streamline O&M handover.
