INDUSTRY NEWS

The National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada's submission focuses on one topic: prompt payment. NTCCC recommends that the federal government introduce and pass federal prompt payment legislation to make construction more efficient on federal projects, more affordable for taxpayers, and to show leadership that will make Canada’s entire construction sector more competitive.

Jamie McMillan discusses barriers she’s faced as a woman in the trade industry and shares advice for young women interested in pursuing a career in it.

LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION & TRAINING

CEC is pleased to announce that it will once again offer the highly acclaimed Estimating Conference from Oct. 17-19 in Toronto. This conference focuses not on how to estimate, but rather on project procurement and strategies. Sessions covered will include deal breakers, project risk and go/no-go strategies, putting together a proposal, and what a general contractor looks for in its selection process — to name a few. Jack Wilhelmi and Tim Wentz from MCA America will lead the conference; Dan Leduc from Norton Rose Fulbright will deliver a special session of his own. Registration is limited to just 30 people, so register today!

More than 1,000 students have completed the 10-day PM CEC/University of Waterloo course since its inception in 2000. This latest session is sure to be another sellout. If you have new hires or people looking to upgrade or refresh their PM skills, this is the course for them! As a bonus, the program is Gold Seal-accredited for those who wish to pursue their certification.

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

Investment in AEC firms—architecture, engineering, and construction—have blossomed in the last few years, as a once low-tech, staid industry begins to feel the full impact of digital technology, especially when it comes to collaboration software, worksite monitoring, safety, and new design tools.

The idea of employing a live “view” of the surrounding environment that can be augmented by computer-generated sensory input has been around for some time—but while it has yet to reach critical mass in the construction industry, it’s not far off. Here are some takes on where AR and VR in construction stand in 2018.
