The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC) has opened the application process for the 2021 Richard McKeagan Scholarship Series, which will see close to $16,000 awarded to students studying in the mechanical contracting and mechanical engineering fields.

The Government of Canada has indicated that infrastructure investments are focused on achieving three core objectives: Promoting economic growth, job creation and competitiveness; tackling climate change and increasing resilience; and improving social inclusion and quality of life for all Canadians.

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada, together with the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating, provided a submission recommending that retrofits, regulatory harmonization and skilled trades be a core aspect of the National Infrastructure Assessment in order to support the federal government in achieving each of these objectives.

The submission recommends that the following themes be paramount in the development of an infrastructure vision for Canada:

  • Assessing Canada’s infrastructure needs and establishing a long-term vision;
  • Achieving net-zero emissions – investing in retrofits;
  • Improving coordination between owners and funders; and
  • Governance of the National Infrastructure Assessment.

You can read our submission on our website.

The MCA Canada Women in Mechanical Construction initiative has signed a memorandum of understanding and joined several industry organizations as a collaborating organization with Skills Ontario’s Young Women’s Initiative. The MOU will create opportunities to share resources while promoting the activities of each respective organization, including a number of events and programming for women in the skilled trades.

“We are extremely excited to be a collaborating organization with this initiative,” said Tania Johnston, CEO of MCA Canada. “The more we can work together on issues of mutual concern, the stronger our voice can be to raise the profile of the skilled trades and the opportunities available for women in the mechanical contracting sector.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

The NTCCC recognizes that the prioritization of infrastructure investments and the empowerment of the construction sector are central to driving Canada’s economic needs into the future. Construction in Canada creates jobs, establishes and maintains vital community assets, and improves the quality of life for all Canadians. As the voice for trade contractors across Canada, we are pleased to participate in the National Infrastructure Assessment by providing our unique insights and industry expertise.

It is critical that trade contractors be part of this conversation regarding an infrastructure strategy, not only to lend their perspective but to have the opportunity to assess labour force impacts and be able to respond to the forecast demand.

The NTCCC submission is available on the coalition's website.

You are invited to participate in a review of the draft of the new Red Seal Occupational Standard for the Steamfitter/Pipefitter trade for Canada.

A draft of the standard was developed at a national virtual workshop attended by trade experts and apprenticeship instructors from across Canada. After this online survey is completed, provincial and territorial industry and apprenticeship committees will also review and validate this standard. In preparation for this step, we would like to give individuals who would like to participate the opportunity to do so.

For this trade, the standard is divided into Major Work Activities, which are broken down into Tasks, which are further broken down into distinct Sub-Tasks.

The survey is completely voluntary and is anonymous, though if you possess a Red Seal, the first digits of your Red Seal number will be requested (these do not identify any individual).

All comments will be forwarded to your province/territory’s apprenticeship authority to review with their committees for consideration.

To complete the survey, please click below.
