Presenting Sponsor, BPL Sales, was pleased to be the inagural sponsor of the Joint MCAM Service Contactors and Associates Advisory Council Lunch and Learn, November 15 at the Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Center.

The event started off with greetings from Bruce McWhirter of AB Mechanical and presenters Rick Klassen from the City of Winning and Bill Ferriera from BuildForce Canada.

Rick Klassen, manager of commercial construction permits development from the City of Winnipeg, spoke about the interim strategy regarding commercial inspections, how/why it was developed and plans moving forward.

Rick highlighted the goal of the interim strategy was to focus delivery of inspection services on major/complex projects and allow for the submission of progress reports, professional certifications and/or licensed contractor declarations coupled with supporting information as an alternative for projects not deemed to be major/complex.

Rick shared the City of Winnipeg will be looking at the housing inspections process and will consider adopting concepts such as:

  • The defect checklist
  • Auto-email communication
  • In-the-field notes, etc.

A copy of his presentation can be requested by emailing illyssa@mcamb.ca, and more information can be found on the City of Winnipeg website here.

BIll Ferreira, executive director from BuildForce Canada, took the stage next and presented information and statistics on construction industry forecasts from 2019-2020. The model he focused on covers 34 "on-site" trades and occupations and "other" remaining occupations (mostly admin/office staff). The data was developed and validated by industry professionals participating on Provincial Labour Market Information committees.

Accodiing to Bill's data and reserach, specifically in Manitoba, the total construction employment is expected to recede by 3,960 workers and the engineereing construction employment to decline by 25% between the years 2020 to 2024.

With 60 people in attendance all in the affected industries, plenty of discussion was had throughout the room. BIll Playford of Mac-Tower says " Bill and Rick have each raised very good topics that are without a doubt concerns in the industry in this area. I look forward to what topics will be discussed at their next event. MCAM is doing a fine job in pinpointing and addressing matters that are important to us”

MCAM WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF OUR LUNCH & LEARN SPONSORS:
