The Wall Street Journal—Venture firms have invested more than $1.2 billion in grocery technology this year, double the total for 2017. Many investments have come in the form of robots and artificial intelligence in the warehouses to increase efficiency as competition for consumer spending on food picks up.

SupplyChainBrain—Fifty-two percent of warehouse executives plan to increase technology investments in the near future in order to streamline goods delivery and achieve supply chain transparency, according to Zebra Technologies. Main expenditures will include a migration to modern warehouse management systems, implementation of real-time inventory tracking solutions and barcode scanners, and internet of things (IoT) devices such as wearables, drones and robotic packaging equipment.

CSCMP’s Supply Chain Quarterly—Freight spending increased by double digits in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2017 despite lower freight shipment volumes, reflecting rising average freight transaction prices, according to the latest quarterly index of U.S. freight activity from financial services giant U.S. Bank. But long-term outlook is stormy, as U.S. economy may slump under weight of trade tariffs, rising interest rates, U.S. Bank report says.
