Open for Business!
On August 10, planners and suppliers gathered virtually for Open for Business! Guests Welcome. A Panel Discussion on Venue Re-Opening and Safety Standards. The hour-long panel was made up of a diverse collection of venue managers with audience Q&A throughout. The event was moderated by Tara Gadsby of the Courtyard Marriott, Monrovia. Guest speakers included Garrett Gerson of Malibu Conference Center at Calamigos Ranch, Mai Lim of Station Casinos and Krystal Moreno of the Fairmont Miramar.
Audience members were able to hear from the hoteliers directly on the challenges they’ve faced during recent months and the innovative measures they’ve taken to reopen safely, execute live events and ensure customer safety. It was an excellent opportunity for MPI Southern California to share best practices on social distancing practices, meeting room configurations, food & beverage delivery, and safety protocols. Said one attendee: “I thought the panelists were excellent. A nice variety of points of view and very comprehensive discussion about relevant issues. I was really impressed by the knowledge and insight each panelist brought to the discussion.” Panelists shared valuable resources with the group including:
Many attendees felt like that topic was valuable, and requested that we continue the conversation as Southern California venues adjust to the shifting environment. Look for more information on topics such as this in the coming months.
Chasing Space
Did you miss out on Chasing Space: An Astronaut's Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances? On August 27, MPI Southern California was joined by a very special guest – Leland Melvin, the only person to catch a pass in the NFL and walk in space.
Leland examined his life through the prism of success and achievement and shared with attendees what motivated him to overcome injuries, setbacks, expulsions and debilitating deafness. The session began as Leland recounted his journey with honesty and curiosity, and he shared thinking by researchers, authors and academics, applying their work to his own life – and by extension giving the audience applicable takeaways and the opportunity to Stay Inspired. After sharing his insights, Leland took the opportunity to address audience questions (including “Star Trek or Star Wars?”) To close out the session, Leland shared Nuannaarpoq – a particularly beautiful Inuit word meaning the “the extravagant pleasure of being alive.” It was a wonderful reminder that even during difficult times, there is beauty and joy in the world if you remember to look for it.
