Dear MPISCC Family,
We hope that you will find this message as not only one of support, but one of action.
At MPI Southern California, we are devastated by what happened to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black Americans, and by the continuing pattern of violence we see within our community and across the country. While we have been moved by the tens of thousands gathering in Los Angeles and the surrounding cities to peacefully protest, we know that the outpouring of emotion needs to transform into action. It is time for us to pay attention and to do more.
Black Americans continue to be marginalized across all areas of society including within the hospitality industry – and even our own chapter. Next year we will have our first Black Chapter President in 44 years of existence. This is shocking and concerning; Southern California is one of the most racially diverse regions of the country. Our membership and leadership need to reflect that. The below is not only an immediate response, but a permanent one as we move forward as an association.
The current and incoming Office of the President has created the MPISCC Diversity & Inclusion Task Force. This will serve as an advisement and action arm to Board Leadership, and will impact all of our chapter initiatives going forward. It will provide opportunities within our membership that include:
⦁ Enhanced diversity & inclusion trainings for Board of Directors, volunteers and members
⦁ Ongoing professional dialogues on racial and social injustice so that we can listen to one another and get more comfortable having difficult conversations
⦁ Offering master classes on how to create change and have an impact within our own organizations
⦁ Developing a policy that ensures a portion of procured services are from Black & minority-owned businesses in Southern California
⦁ Sharing resources, books, films and industry publications to facilitate ongoing learning
⦁ Rolling out programs to increase racial diversity amongst membership and leadership
We look forward to sharing additional information and resources in the coming weeks.
If you are interested in being involved with the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, please contact us at admin@mpiscc.org. All members are welcome and encouraged to participate.
It’s not enough to be against racism; we must be actively anti-racist. We have risen up for our LGBTQ community. We have risen up in support of women’s rights. Now we must RISE UP to support our Black community.
WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.
Joe Martin, 2019-2020 Chapter President
Kristin Twombly, 2020-2021 Incoming Chapter President
Amani Roberts, 2021-2022 Incoming Chapter President
Bryan Quinan, 2018-2019 Immediate Past Chapter President
