Last month, MPISCC put together an insightful two-part discussion that showcased the road to allyship and what it means to stand up and speak out.

By now, we all know that 2020 has been a year of change. Across the United States, people are finally engaging in substantive conversation about issues that were once off-limits, including white male privilege. I can’t think of a better way to end a trying year than to learn how to become a better ally!

Grow

2020 was a year unlike any other, and its presidential election was a momentous one. In November, Election Day turned into Election Week with the results hinging on mail-in votes being counted in battleground states. Then America witnessed history when Joseph Biden and running-mate Kamala Harris took to the stage in Delaware after securing enough electoral votes to become the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect of the United States.

It was a day I will remember forever.

MPISCC is excited to unveil the rebranding of our quarterly volunteer recognition program. For many years, chapter “Shining Stars” were used to acknowledge volunteers during monthly programs. The newly refreshed  Volunteer Impact program is part of an effort to enhance the way MPI Southern California recognizes the volunteers who contribute the chapters successes.

Beginning this month, the Quarterly Volunteer Impact Award will be bequeathed to the chapter member whose contributions have had the greatest impact during the time period. All nominees are recognized during a monthly event. Winners will receive a personalized award, feature in newsletter, and acknowledgement during meetings and on social media.  All quarterly nominees are eligible to win the Annual Volunteer Impact Award, bestowed during the Installation Gala to the volunteer who has had the greatest impact over the past year.

Volunteering is a great way to get the most out of our membership!  To learn more about how you can make an impact, contact Debra Mategrano, vice president of leadership development.

Last year I was asked to join the member care team for MPISCC. As a 38-year MPISCC member, with three years on the board in the 1990s as well as experience on more than 50 committees during my career, I sort of felt like I had done my bit in giving back.

But then I was presented with the chance to reach out to individuals whose memberships had lapsed. It was fun to reconnect with folks I hadn’t spoken with in a few years and to learn how they were doing through the pandemic. It also allowed me to share updates about the various resources and opportunities available throughout our chapter and on the national level to assist members in staying current and connected. This experience was also beneficial for me network regarding jobs and to feel like part of “the team” that I have been so proud to be a part of all these years.
