Over the next several months, the You Belong Committee will be sharing what we call "The DEI Minute"— quick hits of information and content designed to help our chapter level-set our collective diversity, equity and inclusion knowledge. We'll start by providing the definitions of the most commonly used terminology in the space as the starting point of our journey as we embark on true learning and awareness—together!

This month, we share the positive impacts that having a diverse workforce has on business. Read on to learn more!

Tell us about YOU!
I’m an original SoCal girl, with a few years in Chicago and Toronto, and then after some very cold and snowy winters I came back home. I currently live in Huntington Beach. My first hospitality job was for a golf course selling weddings and golf tournaments. Then I started my 10-year career with Marriott hotels working for the Newport Beach Marriott (soon to be VEA). I moved to Chicago to open the new JW, and then spent 5 years in Global Sales before the pandemic.

I joined the team at Van Wagner Productions last March and have been focusing on building their corporate client base of live and virtual event production. We just produced our 39th Super Bowl and we’re working on the NFL Draft in Las Vegas. We will be hosting clients at the Kentucky Derby this year, which has always been on my bucket list.

The global events industry was valued at over $1.1 billion, expected to reach $2.3 billion by 2026. In the U.S. alone, live meeting events supported 2.5 million jobs and generated an additional $1.60 for the economy for every dollar spent.

But that was before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Despite the devastation it has had on the events industry, there are many opportunities and lessons learned that event planners can embrace moving forward. However, there are still key considerations you need to navigate in this new landscape post-COVID-19.

The 2022 study by Destinations International asked respondents how much they agree with the following prompt: “Our destination organization’s external messaging demonstrates and reflects the diversity of the community we represent.” Over 18 percent neither agreed nor disagreed and almost 8 percent disagreed or strongly disagreed—representing a lack of diversity in hiring.
