In the dynamic world of event planning, leadership plays a crucial role in driving innovation, fostering connections, and shaping the future of the industry. Meeting Planners International (MPI) has long been at the forefront of this evolution, with its chapters offering invaluable support and opportunities for growth.

We’re excited to share a recent Q&A with the current President-Elect of MPI’s Toronto Chapter, Zaman Ishaad.  Zaman exemplifies how dedication, passion, and a commitment to volunteer leadership can pave the way to the chapter’s highest role. Through his journey, we’ll explore how anyone, regardless of where they start, can grow into a leadership position and contribute to the success of this thriving community. Let’s dive into a candid conversation about the path to presidency and the impact of volunteerism within MPI Toronto Chapter.

Q: Can you share with us your journey within MPI that led you to the role of President-Elect?

A: I’ve been a member of MPI for eight years, joining as a student and working my way into the industry. MPI was instrumental to my personal and professional development as an industry leader. By volunteering and connecting with industry professionals, I was able to gain new leadership skills, collaborate with planners/suppliers, and advocate for important industry issues. This all led to my application to become President-Elect and showcase the value of MPI so we can build back our membership by catering to the needs of industry professionals, whether new to this world or in it for their entire career.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a leadership position within MPI?

A: I wanted to create more opportunities for industry professionals to grow personally and professionally. MPI is an amazing community to connect with industry leaders, discuss important issues, and share the importance of our work. My goal is to build a community that is inclusive to all members and industry leaders by offering diverse education, partnering with industry suppliers, and increasing member connections and opportunities to collaborate.

Q: What are some of the key experiences or roles you've held within MPI that have prepared you for the presidency?

A: I’ve been volunteering on the board of directors for the past four years in a variety of roles. In my role as Director of Strategic Partnerships during the pandemic, I was able to create new virtual revenue opportunities for the Chapter to keep it running while engaging with industry partners. Working with different committees and roles, I have been exposed to the operational aspects of the Chapter to understand where we can improve in strategy and focus. Being able to adapt to different situations has helped me grow as a leader to make better decisions and support colleagues with the strategy for the Chapter.

Each individual’s volunteer journey is their own, and seeing how Zaman has evolved in not only his career but also in his engagement with MPI Toronto Chapter has been exciting! Thank you, Zaman, for your work in giving back to our industry, and for encouraging new leaders to start their own path.
