The CMP and Sustainability: What's New in the International Standards

The most recent edition of the CMP International Standards includes, for the first time, a specific skill related to environmental sustainability. This is an important step for the industry in that it is a clear demonstration that green meetings are not a trend or fad – they are an accepted (and expected) best practice. In both the CMP International Standards and the 9th Edition of the CIC Manual, sustainability is included as a skill within the strategic planning domain. Moreover, sustainable practices are not relegated to only this chapter, but have been integrated throughout all areas of the manual, as it affects all aspects of event planning, from site selection to evaluation, and everything in between. As an example, the section related to food and beverage discusses options for improving an event’s environmental impact through menu choices.Importantly, the approach to sustainability taken in the manual goes beyond simply environmental aspects and looks at all three aspects of the triple bottom line: people, planet and prosperity. Much like event technology, sustainable practices in our industry are continually evolving. To help keep you up-to-date, MPI has compiled excellent articles, resources and research related to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability at: www.mpiweb.org/CSR. I look forward to seeing you on the path to sustainable events!
