New Electric Vehicle Touring Canada
Mitsubishi Motors' new i-MiEV electric vehicle is making its way across Canada, showcasing its innovative technology. The vehicle is embarking on a 7,500-kilometer tour to build awareness of its entrance into the market.
The new vehicle is capable of driving up to 128 kilometers on a single battery charge. Charging the battery completely takes up to 14 hours, depending on the method used. It can be charged either through a standard plug of 110 volts, through a dryer-sized plug of 220 volts, or a proprietary "industrial" plug.
The Province of Ontario has announced that its goal is to have electric cars make up 5 percent of all vehicles in Ontario by the year 2020. The province received a Toyota Motor Co. Prius hybrid on loan for a year, in order to assist with the preparedness test for the push to electric vehicles.
Mitsubishi has now joined General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co. as another major automobile manufacturer with targets to release an electric vehicle within the next year. Mitsubishi has already begun sales of the i-MiEV in Japan for the equivalent of around $40,000. The company is targeting a late 2011 launch for the car in Canada. |
