Government of Canada Invests in Clean Energy Technology in Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Government of Canada is contributing $3.4 million through Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to assist New Flyer Industries in its development and implementation of its rapid-charge battery-electric bus propulsion technology.  Announced by Lawrence Toet, Member of Parliament for Elmwood-Transcona, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, this new investment highlights the government’s commitment and support for jobs and development of innovative clean energy technology in Winnipeg.

Toet highlighted that New Flyer’s electric bus technology is a clear example of clean energy innovation, all the while providing Canadians with high-quality jobs, stimulating Canada’s national economy.  SDTC representatives were also on hand for the announcement, reiterating that the current technology will help to reduce operational costs as well as emissions.

New Flyer Industries will develop and build a total of four electric buses, as well as a high-capacity charging station.  Following its completion, a four-year in-service evaluation of a small fleet of buses with Winnipeg Transit will take place.  The objective of this evaluation will be to examine the charging system, battery capacity and component life and reliability.  Not only do electric buses have a number of positive benefits to help the environment, but they could also considerably reduce operating costs as well as total life cycle costs.
