One of the greatest benefits of NAFA chapter meetings is the up-to-date information fleet professionals can gain from attending. Case in point: the Great Lakes Chapter hosted a day of fleet educational sessions on November 7. The full slate of presentations took place at University of Toledo Medical College Hilton Hotel, in Toldeo, OH.

The event had title sponsorship provided by Ford Motor Company, with Chrysler and GM Fleet & Commercial generously serving as secondary sponsors; SEMCO Energy Gas Company handled sponsorship for the reception; and Toyota, Chrysler/Leggett & Platt, GM, and NAFA National all provided door prizes.

Great Lakes Chapter Chair Brian Hendrick opened the meeting after breakfast, leading 45 attendees through a packed roster of informative presentations.

"Driver Safety-related Issues" presented by Phil Moser, Vice President, Advanced Driver Training Services, Inc. (ADTS), and Vice Chair for NAFA's Safety Advisory Council started things off with ideas for instituting a culture of driver safety within fleets. This sentiment was expanded upon later in the day by Dan Shive, Vice President, Risk Management Services for LeasePlan USA. With his presentation "Risk And Accident Management" Shive offered a thought-provoking argument for why being a leader in safety and risk management is so important to fleet. "In this industry, we influence and by doing something different we set the standard others follow."

Joanne Marsh, NAFA's Director of Marketing and Communications took attendees "From Beyond Fleet To NAFA.org," taking attendees through NAFA's online portals to show them the benefits, value, and information they can gain from them.

Mark Catlin, J.J. Keller and Associates presented "The Changing Face of DOT Compliance (CSA Scorecard and MAP-21)," a look into the the current and future regulatory environment for fleet. Catlin went into detail about the impending changes for the CSA Scorecard coming in only a few weeks in December 2012.

The day's sessions also featured Lee Calkins, OEM Specialty Vehicle Project Manager, Leggett & Platt offering "Effective, Efficient, Ergonomic: Cost Effective Police Vehicle Upfitting"; Clean Energy Coalition's Laura Palombi speaking on "Creating Sustainable Fleets In Michigan"; and NAFA Excellence in Education Award Winner Matthew Betz presenting "Changing Organizational Behaviors to Reach Your Fleet Goals."
