General Motors is facing the recall of over 33,000 vehicles due to an issue with its Buick LaCrosse, a mid-size sedan, and luxury Cadillac SRX Crossover models manufactured earlier this year. The recall affects 26,582 vehicles in the US, with the rest thought to have been sold in Canada, Mexico, the Middle East, and China.
With the notice appearing on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, GM commented that a potential software problem can cause the transmissions to inadvertently slip from manual to automatic mode, something that can unexpectedly override any slowing effect from the transmission, raising the risk of a crash.
General Motors said that no crashes or injuries related to the issue have been reported. Expected to start on March 28, GM will notify owners and ask them to take affected vehicles to its dealers who will reprogram the transmission control module at no cost.
The affected Buick LaCrosse models were manufactured between April 25, 2012 through to March 6, 2013; and for the Cadillac SRX vehicles between May 29, 2012 through to February 18, 2013. If you suspect your vehicle may be affected, Cadillac owners are asked to call 1-866-982-2339, Buick owners can call 1-866-694-6546
GM was also forced to recall 48 compressed natural gas-powered versions of its 2011-model Chevrolet Express to repair a potentially incorrectly built pressure relief vent pipe. As it stood, the defective pipe could allow natural gas into the passenger compartment and increase the risk of a fire or explosion.
GM has said all the vans were sold to three U.S. fleet customers and one dealer, each vehicle has been identified and inspected, and there have been no reported crashes, injuries, or fires related to the issue.
