New Idle Reduction Initiative Announced In Winnipeg

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz has announced that, as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Public Service will make a recommendation to trial and test Automatic Location systems in fleet vehicles.

Mayor Katz reiterated that the City is committed to reducing the government’s impact on the environment, through the establishment of attainable goals for greenhouse gas emission reductions and increased sustainability.

As part of the Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency’s Green Fleet Plan, the new initiative – an Automatic Vehicle Location system – will permit the collection of data with respect to the amount of time City fleet vehicles and equipment spend idling. The data collected will then be analyzed to enforce the City’s idle reduction policy, a key component of the Green Fleet Plan and its goal to reduce fleet idling by 50 percent by 2019.
