The City of Wylie, TX expects to see heads turning at its $650,000 worth of additions to its public safety program.
It is introducing a Humvee and a Caiman 6x6 Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected BAE Systems Personnel Carrier to its fleet this week.
The MRAP, intended to help troops survive hitting an improvised explosive device in combat, will be used as part of SWAT training and for community events. While it’s about twice the size of similar armored vehicles used by police in other cities, City Spokesman Craig Kelly said those often run upward of $300,000.
The vehicles were free as part of a Department of Defense surplus program.
