NAFA's Puget Sound Chapter convened on June 4 to discuss the topic "Natural Gas for Transportation." The chapter meeting was located at Salty's Waterfront Seafood Grill on Alki Beach in Seattle, WA.
The focus of the program, attended by 42 Fleet Managers and Affililates, was to learn about the current usage and status of natural gas in transportation. Bill Morgan of Clean Energy helped in giving attendees an overview of what is current in both the United States as a whole, and is specific to the Puget Sound area.
A local success story was provided by Click Wholesale Distributing (a small wine distributorship) who converted its seven delivery trucks to CNG, and measured its positive impact on the company's return-on-investment.
World CNG reviewed the current spectrum of passenger vehicles and light trucks for which CNG and LNG conversions are available. It was noted that many public and private concerns are purchasing OEM vehicles with hardened valves which would facilitate future conversion, if that option was pursued.
Chris Sanderson of Western Peterbilt reviewed their Natural Gas offerings in larger trucks. Of Peterbilt’s approximate annual sales of 50,000 trucks, it is estimated by 2,000 of these will be Natural Gas -- up from less than one percent four years ago.
Bill Morgan finished the afternoon by offering an industry-wide overview of current and future plans for national infrastructure, as well as those for the local area.
