Great things come out of pooling your resources, and quite often that makes for worthwhile and informative chapter meetings too. The Tri-State and Great Lakes Chapters held an Annual Fall Educational Seminar on Wednesday, October 8 at the Toledo Hilton Garden Inn at Levis Commons, in Perrysburg, OH. Over 50 participants attended the full-day seminar.

Along with the day's education sessions, members took in a continental breakfast and lunch as well as a reception and dinner the previous evening, for anyone who arrived early. There were plenty of opportunities for networking and inter-chapter conversation.

The day's education started with a spirited, general conversation about fleet safety, who is doing what, what is working and what is not, and what the primary concerns are right now for the fleet profession. This led to a driver training and simulator session presented by Element Fleet. Having the opportunity to test out your behind-the-wheel skill, or to have those skills challenged without the inherent risks of being on an actual course, is something everyone should do at least once. It is good to be reminded that one may not be as agile a driver as they think they are from time to time. (And doesn't everyone think they are the best driver?)

Other sessions included discussions on improving driver safety with data and technology, using metrics and key performance indicators, tallying your total cost of ownership, the building and implementation of fleet policies, and much more.

The day's events wrapped up at 4:00 after a presentation from NAFA Senior Vice President Ruth Alfson, CAFM, where she offered very persuasive information supporting the value of NAFA's CAFM certification.

Thanks to everyone who attended. We hope you took some great new ideas back to your offices and we look forward to seeing you at the next chapter meeting.

Special thanks to Sherry Calkins, SambaSafety, for material in this article.
