Video: NAFA's New England Chapter Gets Shaken On Vehicle Safety

The news has been unavoidable, and frightening as well. Drivers rely on the safety of their vehicles when they're on the road, and require that emergency systems run in proper order when the unexpected happens. Yet with a massive multi-state recall being requested by NHTSA for defective airbag systems, uncertainty looms large.

Insurance companies need to be able to do forensic research with vehicles post-crash to make sure issues are not inherent in the machinery itself. This is what the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. Research Institute for Safety is all about, and why NAFA's New England Chapter held their November meeting at the facility on November 19.

45 people attended the meeting, taking in the Institute's history, and learning about the research they do regarding vehicle/driver safety. One of the memorable moments of the event was when attendees saw first-hand the explosive force of an airbag deploying from a mounted steering wheel. Pete Maertens of the Research Institute for Safety conducts the demonstration in the video below.

After the in-depth session, attendees were invited to an optional facility tour.

Special thanks to New England Chapter Chair Peter Belloli and Karen Doyon, CAFM for material in this article.
