NAFA's Ontario Chapter On The Green For SickKids

NAFA's Ontario Chapter does it again. Swinging the irons at the Copper Creek Golf Club on May 28, not only did people have a very good time, but participated in a very good cause.

For a third year, the Ontario Chapter's golf outing supported The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). It is due to the generosity of our sponsors and to all who participated that NAFA Ontario will be presenting SickKids Hospital with a $30,000 donation!

This year, we were fortunate to have Bryan Muir as our Guest Master of Ceremonies for the 2015 Annual SickKids Charity Golf Tournament. Bryan is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman who played 279 games in the National Hockey League winning a Stanley Cup Championship with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001.

Quite a few folks had their picture taken wearing Bryan Muir’s Stanley Cup Championship ring. Pictured here is (left) Jeff Meggitt, CAFM®, Ontario Chapter Vice Chair with Bryan.

Also joining the chapter this year representing SickKids is Sarah Grace Bebenek. Sarah is a recent graduate from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Honors specializing in Health Studies. Her connection to the Hospital for Sick Children began with her sister Meagan’s diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor in 2000. Unfortunately Meagan lost her battle to cancer the following June, but her legacy has continued to live on through her family’s creation of Meagan’s Walk, "creating a circle of hope," which has raised more than $3.1 million for crucial research into pediatric brain tumors.

The hospital got its start in the spring of 1875, when a group of Toronto women led by Elizabeth McMaster rented an 11-room house in downtown Toronto for $320 a year, set up six iron cots, and declared open a hospital "for the admission and treatment of all sick children."

(Pictured at right) Sgt. Lloyd Dow (retired) York Regional Police Fleet Manager and longtime NAFA Member, came out early morning to help with the registration and to convince folks to donate to a worthy cause.

The $232-million (CAN) Hospital has been paid for by taxpayers and contributors to the Hospital's capital campaign, SickKids Foundation, and other donors and bequests.

Most patients now have their own room, with a washroom, storage, and a day bed so a parent can stay at night. SickKids fills an entire city block, the Atrium houses exciting facilities to help provide enhanced care and improve the treatment and diagnosis of childhood disease.

St. Ambroise (beer) paid a visit to the tenth hole, and went home with the golfer who landed their ball closest to this package of beer. NAFA Ontario thanks Barry Pletch, Regional Sales Manager for McAuslan Brewing for providing the very generous gift of a keg, and for providing the prize packages for the most "honest" golfers (or, as Bryan Muir put it, in reality, the worst team)!

Gina McNeil took home a gift certificate that was redeemable at the brewery for an equivalent amount of St. Ambroise!

Special thanks to NAFA Vice President for Canada and Northern Trustee Michael Cole for material in this article.
