NAFA's Alabama Gets Deep With Work Trucks

The Alabama Chapter had what could be called a "holistic" experience during the late-May chapter meeting at Southland International Trucks in Homewood, AL. Chapter members and attendees heard about the newest technologies in vehicles as well as the oldest and most essential: maintaining your fuel lines from damage through filtration.

The meeting's first presenter Reynolds Boyd is Altec Service and Support representative for Southland International. After a video demonstrating the company's unique features in telematics diagnostic systems, Reynolds showed attendees live-feed examples of the company’s technological capabilities. Meeting attendees had a chance to look at lightweight components that plug into the vehicle, and are not exclusive to International brand trucks alone. This technology can piggyback off existing telematics and provides fault codes for remote diagnostic reviews. Further, it integrates (for example) the dealer, vendor, and fleet operators which can help to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Ron Smith, the second presenter of the day, walked attendees through a slideshow, providing an overview and further insight relevant to diesel particulate filters (DPF). Smith, Service Manager for Southland International, asserted the importance of maintaining and remaining aware of [fluid] levels in tanks. Also, algae can grow in your tanks, so his recommendation is that fleets should be draining the tanks every so often to check. It should be included as part of the filter monitoring protocol.

Afterward, attendees were treated to a tour of the shop to see the equipment in action -- an appropriate conclusion for a day devoted to looking further into the work trucks many fleets use each day.
