UPS Investing $100 Million In Compressed Natural Gas-Powered Trucks

UPS, the global shipping giant, recently announced that they will be investing $100 million in the alternative fuel infrastructure by purchasing 380 new Kenworth T680 tractors, powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). They will also be adding 12 new TrueStar Energy CNG fueling stations to the 18 it already operates from Texas to Thailand.

In the U.S. alone, UPS's fleet includes over 6,840 all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic electric, CNG, LNG (liquefied natural gas), propane, and light-weight composite body vehicles. These T680 tractors are just the latest additions for a company working it meet it's goal of logging 1 billion miles globally with it's alternative fuel fleet.

The 12 cities that will see these new Kenworth's are Amarillo, TX, Chattanooga, TN; Columbia, SC; El Paso, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Kansas City, KS; Phoenix, AZ; Reno, NV; San Antonio, TX; Tifton, GA; Trinidad, CO; and Willow Grove, PA. The trucks will be fitted with fuel cylinder assemblies from Agility Fuel Systems and Quantum. This system will be built of aircraft-grade aluminum and the structure will be mounted on rubber isolators behind the cab to improve aerodynamics.
