Nissan North America is beefing up it's pickup truck lineup with the release of the first-ever single cab Titan. Both the base model Titan and the Titan XD will be available as a single cab for the 2017 model year. Aimed at the commercial fleet market, this latest variant of Nissan's full-size pickup is scheduled to hit showrooms this fall.
Nissan's goal is to eventually offer the redesigned 2017 Titan in a variety of combinations. The automaker plans to offer a single cab, a crew cab, and a king cab, along with three bed lengths, three engines, and five trim levels. The single cab version is already projected to account for 15 percent of Titan sales once the full line of trucks becomes available.
The Titan XD single cab will be offered with either a Cummins 5.0 liter V-8 turbodiesel or a 5.6 liter gasoline V-8 under the hood. The regular Titan single cab, which has a shorter wheelbase than the XD, will only be offered with the gas-powered V-8 to start. A V-6 is will be added in the future.
General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler have dominated the pickup market in the United States for decades. While Toyota has offered the Tundra in the U.S. for almost two decades, through July of 2016 it still ranks fifth in sales behind the Detroit 3:
- Ford F-Series (65,657 units)
- Chevy Silverado (54,116 units)
- Ram Pickup (39,827 units)
- GMC Sierra (22,428 units)
- Toyota Tundra (10,474 units)
While Nissan reports Titan sales are up 0.8 percent in 2016, The Titan has fallen even further behind the Tunrda's sales through July, selling only 6,099 units in the first half of this year. This new entry-level offering for the commercial fleet market could be the shot in the arm that Nissan needs to remain competitive in a market dominated by brands based in the United States.
Pricing for the Titan and Titan XD single cabs will be released closer to market launch.
