Attention NAFA Members: Bylaws Amendment Vote Coming Your Way!

Next week, all NAFA Members (those who manage fleets) will receive an important email from NAFA asking them to vote on changing the Association’s bylaws.  Please look for this email on Monday, August 22, and be sure to respond within the two-week voting period.  I encourage you to vote "in favor" of the proposed changes.

If you do not receive this email on August 22, and are certain the email was not blocked by a "spam" or "junk mail" filter, please contact bylaws@nafa.org with an alternative (non-business) email address or fax number to which we can send your personalized ballot.

If the proposed bylaws amendments are approved, all NAFA Affiliates and Regional Affiliates (those who provide valuable products and services to fleet managers) will be able to:
  • Vote in all NAFA national elections and chapter elections.
  • Be considered for positions on the new Board of Directors (which is currently known as the Board of Trustees).
  • Be considered for Regular Member status if their job responsibilities do not include sales of any kind.
  • Be considered for leadership positions on national committees and local chapters.
In addition, the bylaws revision would:
  • Change the structure of the Board of Trustees (but not the size) and revise the process for election of the President, Senior Vice President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer.
  • Require less long-term commitment to move up the national leadership ladder.
  • Implement safeguards to ensure the Board is always comprised of a majority of fleet managers and that no company has more than one representative on the Board.
I, and the entire NAFA Board of Trustees, believe these changes are necessary for NAFA to remain relevant and successful.  NAFA’s bylaws have remained almost entirely the same since NAFA’s inception in 1957, nearly 60 years ago.  Clearly, much has changed since that time and it is time for NAFA to change as well.

Approving, or voting "in favor" of the bylaws amendments will enable NAFA to expand membership and leadership opportunities for Affiliates to level the playing field for these valued supplier partners.  At the same time, though, NAFA will be implementing safeguards to ensure the association is always an organization dedicated to fleet management professionals and led in its highest positions by fleet managers.

Approving the bylaws amendments will also expand the pool of potential leaders for the Association and increase engagement opportunities for everyone.  The amendments will also simplify the process for getting involved on the national level and reduce the time commitment required of national leaders.

From the feedback I’ve heard since March, when we first announced these ideas, the overwhelming majority of you are saying it’s about time NAFA made these changes.  But please do not be complacent or think this is a "done deal."  We need your vote!  The only way we can make these changes is to ensure the bylaws amendments are approved.  Please be sure to vote "in favor" of the amendments when you receive your ballot on August 22.

If you still have questions about the proposed amendments, please see the FAQ document and video on NAFA’s website.  You can find them here: http://www.nafa.org/about-nafa/bylaws-2016/

Sincerely,

Phil
