Hyundai Recalls Elantras For Brake Issue

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 64,500 Elantras from the 2013 model year because the brake pedal stopper pads can deteriorate over time. The automaker said in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that this issue can result in perpetual illumination of the car's brake lights and can also result in the driver being able to shift into drive without placing their foot on the brake pedal first.

"If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights may stay illuminated preventing accurate communication to following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping," the recall documents stated.

While this problem can result in a higher risk of being involved in a crash, and potentially being injured as a result, Hyundai has said that they are unaware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue to date.

 This recall follows a similar one from November 2015 for Hyundai Sonatas that experienced the same problem. Hyundai launched an investigation into the durability of the part, which is used on various vehicles, in July of 2014.

The brake pedal stopper pad is supplied to Hyundai by Kyung Chang Industrial, Co. of South Korea. Hyundai is continuing "to consider possible supplier changes." 

Hyundai's letter to NHTSA said that this recall is set to begin on September 30. Customers can bring their car to their local dealership, who will replace the brake pedal stopper pad free of charge. One batch of affected vehicles was produced between December 1, 2012, and February 19, 2013, at a South Korean Hyundai plant, while another was built between January 23, 2013, and April 30, 2013, at the automaker’s Alabama assembly plant.
