NAFA Chief Executive Officer Phillip E. Russo, CAE, recently wrote an article on the subject of vehicle telematics, the opportunities telematics afford, the technological challenges they pose, and how all these will impact mobility in the not-too-distant future. The article, "Telematics is Key for the Car of the Future," was included as a print insert in USA Today.
Russo said in the article: "Looking toward the future, telematics is quickly becoming an important part of the "smart" connected vehicle. This will likely provide significant safety benefits by enabling vehicles to communicate with each other and with the roadway network, as well as quickly communicate to authorities the need for emergency assistance."
There are significant issues to overcome, particularly in the area of vehicle security and carhacking. "In 2016, the FBI and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a warning to the general public and manufacturers of vehicles, vehicle components, and aftermarket devices 'to maintain awareness of potential issues and cybersecurity threats related to connected vehicle technologies in modern vehicles," Russo added.
