Jasper National Park, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, is home to The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Alberta. The fleet consists of a variety of vehicles necessary for traversing expansive natural landscape.

NAFA Regular Member and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Fleet Manager Hjalmar Tiesenhausen, CAFS®, has another — very eclectic — addition to his motor pool. “We’ve had the fortune to have the opportunity to refurbish our 1924 Buick McLaughlin this past year. It is usually out on parade once a year, on Canada Day, and can be used for weddings. Typically, it is on display at the front of the Main Lodge for guests to take pictures with.”

The refurbishment allowed the lodge’s mechanics and apprentice an opportunity to get their hands dirty and learn firsthand what early vehicle technology was like. “We had to replace the tires, have a wheelwright replace the wooden spokes, replace and varnish the wooden interior, reupholster the seats and interior, and repaint.”

Work continues on the McLaughlin this winter as the team tackles the vehicle’s starter.

“We are lucky to have our company allow us the time and money to accomplish this,” Tiesenhausen said. “[The car] will be on display for many years to come.”
