Two-and-a-half-years into its mandate, consumer safety is of paramount concern for the government in its approach to transport policy.
A new rule from Transport Canada will impose new requirements on manufacturers of vehicles in Canada involving lighting and visibility for vehicles during low-light times of the day.
As of 2021, vehicles in Canada will be required to increase visibility in low-light conditions by having one of three features:
- Daytime running lights and tail lights when the vehicle instrument panel is illuminated and the vehicle is in operation
- Headlights, tail lights, and side marker lights that automatically turn on in low-light conditions
- A driver's instrument panel that stays dark until the driver turns on all the required lights
The new regulations will also allow for innovative vehicle lighting technologies that enhance visibility without compromising the visibility of oncoming traffic.
A quick review of other recent road transport items Minister Marc Garneau has undertaken includes a consultation on enhancing safety for cyclists and other vulnerable road users, and an announcement of the passage of Bill S-2, the recall bill that was commonly referred to by the government as "an important bill for road safety."
Minister Garneau has two more significant vehicle policies yet to come in 2018: a zero-emissions vehicle strategy and an expected approach on the regulation of autonomous vehicles.
