New Trucking Regulations In Place In Western Canada
New regulations are now in effect for large commercial vehicles traveling across the boundaries of Canada’s three most western provinces, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The New West Partnership Trade Agreement provides consistent regulations and policies across the provinces, governing the operation of large transport trucks without compromising safety.
With the new uniform rules with regards to the size and weights of vehicles, in addition to other factors, this will allow safer and more efficient operation between the provinces. British Columbia Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom highlighted that the changes will result in more flexibility, higher productivity, and lower costs for the trucking industry. In addition, it will help to keep roads safe for all travelers.
Key changes include the following areas:
- Steering axle weights
- Length and width for trucks and tractors
- Pilot cars
- Roadside enforcement
Moving forward, other opportunities to streamline the regulations will take place, with the provinces hoping to achieve these changes by July 2012.
