Nissan Recalling 2010-2011 Sentra Over Stall Fears

Nissan is recalling some 2010 and 2011 model-year Sentra models over the zinc coating on positive battery terminals. Certain Sentras with MR20 engines had too much zinc applied to the stud bolt, which could cause damage to the engine control module (ECM), which can cause a drop in voltage severe enough to cut power to the engine when trying to start the car and when running.

The manufacturer's report date to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA; December 14, 2011), logged 33,803 potentially affected units with this particular issue.

The report also stated that it may not be possible to restart the engine after it has stopped, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan is notifying owners of the cars in question, and dealers will swap out the positive battery terminal and cover, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before January 23, 2012. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov to further investigate (NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 11V579000).
