Government of Canada Reiterates Commitment to Clean Vehicle Technologies

Federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities, Denis Lebel, has announced the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to advance clean vehicle technologies. This includes collaborating with the automotive industry to ensure that safe, clean, and innovative transportation options are available for all Canadians.

Lebel highlighted that the government is now poised to launch the next phase of the ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program, which will see the review of the safety and environmental performance of new vehicle technologies. During the course of the next several years, a variety of innovations will be introduced by the automotive industry, which will improve vehicle safety and meet increasingly rigorous environmental regulations.

The ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program is a five-year, $38-million program, established to proactively test advanced vehicle technologies to expand safety and environmental regulations, as well as industry codes and standards. The new program will also expand testing activities to include heavy-duty trucks and a broader range of technologies.

This initiative will help Canada reach its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by seventeen percent from 2005 levels by the year 2020.
