Anti-Idling Policy Introduced in British Columbia
A new anti-idling policy has been adopted by the District of West Kelowna, with a vote of four to three. Announced in June 2012, the new policy will prevent District of West Kelowna staff from idling district-owned vehicles for more than five minutes.
The ultimate goal of the new policy is to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mayor Doug Findlater highlighted that having the district itself reduce their own emissions will serve as an example for the private sector and encourage others to do the same.
Exceptions to the five-minute rule include drivers of district-owned vehicles being stopped in traffic, using their vehicle for an operational activity, or if extreme temperatures necessitate the use of the vehicle’s heat or air conditioning, for the safety and benefit of passengers.
