Which Popemobile For The New Pope?

When Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was named the new Pope, Catholics from around the world rejoiced.

There was much to celebrate. His new name, Pope Francis, is a direct tribute to Francis Assisi – a holy leader who respected nature and served the poor.

In addition, those who know the new Pope describe Francis as a "normal" person who lives modestly, eschews many of the trappings associated with power and remains focused on his devotion and work. In fact, one of the words ascribed to him most frequently is "humble."

All of which raises an interesting question in terms of transportation: What will he select to be his new vehicle?

Historically, the pontiff has used the Popemobile during outdoor public appearances, allowing the Pope to be more mobile and visible when greeting large crowds. In fact, over time there have been numerous designs for the Popemobile since its maiden voyage under Pope John Paul II, when he used what in essence was a modified truck to address crowds on his first trip to Poland as Pope.

A quick look back shows that the "original" Popemobile was the sedia gestatoria, a chair carried on the shoulders of a number of papal attendants.

Will the next Popemobile be fueled by natural gas? A Hybrid? It’s anyone’s guess, but one thing is for sure: Francis will have a global agenda and he’ll definitely need a first class ride to get him there.
