Three-Time Goill Award Winner Retires From City Of San Antonio
NAFA Member Bob Stanton announced his retirement from the City of San Antonio effective July. Stanton was the Assistant Director, Building and Equipment Services: Fleet for the City, responsible for vehicle and equipment maintenance for 4,700 units, vehicle acquisition, and fuel management.
Stanton won the Larry Goill Memorial Quality Fleet Management Idea Award three times - 2004, 2007, and 2010. He was one of only three to do so, with the other winners being Jack Harris (1997, 1998, 1999) and Carl Nelson (2000, 2003, 2012).
Stanton previously was Director of Fleet Management for the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioner, and prior to that was Director of Fleet Management for Polk County Board of County Commissioners, a position he held for 19 years. Stanton was City Manager for UPS Truck Leasing from August 1988 to November 1992, and began his fleet management career in 1978, as Director of Fleet Administration for PepsiCo, a position he held until 1982.
For his third Goill win, Stanton was recognized for his work in training and incentivizing drivers to be more eco-friendly. His award-winning idea reduced fuel consumption by nearly half a million gallons (thirteen percent), decreased preventable accidents by 22 percent, saved Polk County more than 1.5 million dollars, and was featured in a Fox News story on Florida television. The idea was based around training Polk County employees to drive in an eco-friendly way. To enhance the training, employees were told that any savings would be split between the county and the employee.
Until 2013, the NAFA/Bell Canada Larry Goill Memorial Quality Fleet Management Idea Award was named after Larry Goill, NAFA’s Vice President for Canada and the Supervising Engineer of Fleet Services for Bell Canada until his passing in 1995. In 2013, the Goill award was absorbed into NAFA's Fleet Excellence Awards (FLEXY).
