In Memoriam: Alfred A. Hawley (1920-2013)

Alfred A. Hawley, 92, of Salem, VA, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2013. September would have marked his 50th anniversary with NAFA. Alfred was a fleet professional with 3M Corporation.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Vining Hawley, and her children, Alice Root of Buffalo, NY, Judy Hastings and her husband, Michael, of Albany, NY, Pat Garrison and her husband, Jim, of Elliston, VA, and Bob Vining of Roanoke, VA; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Dorothy Hawley Billings and Maurice Hawley and his wife, Esther, all of Rutland, VT; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Hawley was the Chair of the Chicago Chapter in the late-1970s and received NAFA's Honorary Member Award in 1981.

Alfred served in the U.S. Navy and retired from 3M after 33 years of service. He had been a ballroom dancer and loved traveling worldwide through Friendship Force International, an organization that provides opportunities to explore new countries and cultures from the inside by bringing people together at the personal level. Through the signature program of home hospitality, local hosts welcome international visitors into their culture, sharing with them meals, conversation, and the best sights and experiences of their region.
