NorCal-Northern Nevada Chapter Digs Into Personal Use Topic

36 people, 1 speaker, a great meal. This was the scene for the November 7 NorCal-Northern Nevada Chapter meeting. Chapter members came together, bringing along their CFO’s, HR Managers, and more and prepared to hear a great message about Personal Use Compliance. The speaker was Matt Betz, Vice President for Business Development for CRSFleet.

The day started with time for networking, sharing thoughts and ideas with one another. California can sometimes be plagued with some very unique fleet management situations, and this networking time allows members to bounce ideas off others who have experienced similar issues. This was followed up with another delicious meal from the Cattlemen’s restaurant in Livermore.

As coffee and dessert was being served, Matt began his presentation on Personal Use, and how to develop an IRS compliant program. He did a great job of sharing the history of personal use in America, specifically in fleets, and then provided a number of issues that plague companies trying to comply with this IRS mandate, including under-reporting and under-charging drivers. He continued with methodology on how to properly calculate personal use, and what expenses to include or not include as business vs. personal use.

Matt then wrapped up the presentation with suggestions/products on how to efficiently and accurately account for personal use. There were a number of questions that followed, leading to an interesting and educational follow-up discussion. A number of members commented afterwards that they had a check-list of items to take back to their organizations for consideration.

Chapter Chair Jason Hicks, CAFM, concluded the meeting with a request for volunteers to serve as chapter officers for the organization, as members transition off in the spring. Jason also reminded members of the chapter’s annual Holiday luncheon, December 5, at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Walnut Creek.

Special thanks to Jason Hicks, CAFM, for material in this article.
