Fleetmatics Announces Plan To Sell Driving Data To Insurers

In an effort to find new ways of monetizing data, fleet management software company Fleetmatics Group announced, on March 13, that they are planning to begin selling data about driving behavior to insurance companies. These plans were announced by Jim Travers, Fleetmatics' CEO, via the Wall Street Journal.

Fleetmatics sells a subscription service to commercial fleet owners that allows fleet managers to track their vehicles and manage driver behavior.

The insurance companies that purchase this information could use the data to offer lower premiums to customers with safe driving metrics. What remains to be seen is whether the move poses a potential breach of privacy, and whether companies might opt to go with a different, comparable service that promises not to recirculate the data.
