New Road Safety Rules in Ontario
Changes have been announced in Ontario, effective September 1, which include tougher penalties for distracted driving, new rules to protect cyclists, and actions to safeguard tow truck drivers and children riding school buses. Below is a summary of the changes:
- Distracted Driving: Penalties include an increased fine of $490 and three demerit points.
- Cyclist Safety: An increased fine of $365 is now in place for the "dooring" of cyclists. Conviction will also include three demerit points. In addition, drivers are required to leave a distance of one meter when passing cyclists (where possible) or face a $110 fine and two demerit points. Finally, cyclists who don’t use bicycle lights and reflectors as required will face a higher set fine of $110.
- Tow Trucks and School Buses: Failure to slow down and move over for a tow truck stopped on the side of the road to provide assistance can result in a set fine of $490. Additionally, school buses will now be the only buses allowed to be chrome yellow in order to make them more recognizable.
Steven Del Duca, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, highlighted that the government remains committed to working hard to put an end to distracted driving, protect cyclists, and improve the safety of tow truck drivers and children riding school buses.
