Premiers And Territorial Leaders’ Historic Meeting
On November 23, Prime Minister Trudeau met with all premiers and territorial leaders of the country for a historic meeting in nearly seven years. Climate change was at the heart of the conversations in preparation for the United Nations conference on climate change in Paris.
During the meeting, there was a presentation from climate scientists in order to show how serious climate change is and how determined Premier Trudeau is in making a national public policy on this matter.
Premiers and territorial leaders expressed their content towards Trudeau’s lead on climate change in Canada. Moreover, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley gave a summary on her climate change strategy released on November 22, which includes a hard cap on greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands, imposing a carbon tax and phasing out coal-fired power plants.
"Today we come together in our national capital for the first time in a very long time to speak the truth about climate change, to stop denying there is an issue and to begin doing our part instead,'' declared Rachel Notley, Alberta's premier.
In sum, the Liberals have certainly changed the tone and approach towards climate change in the lead-up to the Paris conference. A national public policy has yet to be crafted and introduced by the new government and it could have a potential impact on NAFA members and other fleet managers.
