Next-Generation Hyundai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Due In 2018

In June 2014, U.S. dealerships in California began taking deliveries of Hyundai Tuscans that were available as hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles. These were the first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles available from the manufacturer.

Just a few weeks ago, Hyundai Motor Co. announced that they are set to unveil their second-generation hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle in early 2018.

The announcement of this latest powertrain will be made to coincide with South Korea, Hyundai's home country, playing host to the 2018 Winter Olympics. Hyundai see the games as a potential marketing goldmine, and have planed to make a "big event" out of them, according to Ahn Byung-ki, Hyundai Eco-vehicle Development Director.

Toyota plans to do the same thing with their own hydrogen cell vehicles, set to be unveiled at the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.

The new powertrain will have less platinum in the catalyst, but will also feature a bigger battery and a smaller, lighter electric motor with a higher output than the current version. The vehicle is also being designed entirely by Hyundai, bucking the trend of manufacturers joining forces to develop new technologies to power their vehicles.

Ahn said that the automaker's new vehicle will be "somewhere between a CUV and an SUV."

Currently, Hyundai has produced around 1,000 FCV s worldwide. The majority of the deliveries of the hydrogen fuel cell Tuscans have been for fleets.
