The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) annual Drive Safely Work Week campaign, supported by NAFA, takes place October 4-8 and focuses on employers and districted driving, especially in the area of electronic device policies. In kicking off the 2010 national Distracted Driving Summit, Secretary LaHood announced that he is initiating a new rulemaking to prohibit commercial truck drivers from texting while transporting hazardous materials. In addition, Secretary LaHood announced that two rules proposed at last year’s summit have now become the law of the land. Rules banning commercial bus and truck drivers from texting on the job and restricting train operators from using cell phones and other electronic devices while in the driver’s seat have been posted.

General Motors is recalling more than 20,200 MY 2009-2010 Cadillac CTS and CTS-V vehicles after these models failed to comply with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requirements. The recall is expected to begin about Oct. 20, with dealers replacing the glove compartment assembly or modifying the structure of the instrument panel free of charge, according to the filing and, in some vehicles, modify the instrument panel structure.

Last week Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced a partnership between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation to combat distracted driving. Congress passed a Bonus Depreciation Measure but has yet to take final action on extending the $1-a-gallon tax credit for biodiesel and it is uncertain at this time whether Congress will act on extending the ethanol credit before final adjournment.

British Columbia’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) branch embarked on a week-long inspection blitz to ensure that commercial vehicles are operating with safe braking systems. The Government of British Columbia has also introduced new rules, targeting speeders and impaired drivers. Effective September 20, Canada’s toughest impaired driving law and new penalties for excessive speeders will help to save lives by removing drunk drivers and speeders from the roads

A close analysis of more than 115,000 vehicle listings in the first quarter of 2010 by Manheim Consulting indicates that efficiency and price realization are not necessarily at odds with each other and that they actually go hand-in-hand.

Ford has initiated its electric vehicles plan for Europe, with the debut of its Transit Connect Electric at the 2010 IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany. Ford plans to introduce, for European customers, five full electric or hybrid vehicles across its light commercial vehicle, C and CD and ranges, by 2013.

Pike Research anticipates that the fleet market for hybrid electric passenger cars and light duty trucks is expected to grow at a rate of 18% between 2010 and 2015, resulting in sales of more than 740,000 hybrid fleet vehicles worldwide in 2015. Hybrids will account for 3.7% of global light duty vehicle fleet sales in 2015, while the largest single market, the United States, will see hybrids reach 7.4% of light duty vehicle fleet sales.
