Manitoba Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, Steve Ashton has announced proposed legislation which would heighten passenger safety, including those in wheelchairs and pickup trucks. Also, Minister Ashton has announced proposed changes to the Highway Traffic Act, which would see more heavy trucks and other vehicles fall in line with the National Safety Code standards.

NHTSA is recommending a lower threshold for drunk driving saying the .05 standard will cut traffic deaths. On the group’s recommendation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advised states to cut their threshold for drunk driving from .08 blood alcohol content (BAC) level to .05.

Private trucking fleets are currently adding capacity at a faster rate than for-hire fleets, according to the Q2 2013 Fleet Sentiment survey conducted by CK Commercial Vehicle Research. Half of the private fleets participating in the quarterly survey indicated they were adding capacity with the power units they expected to purchase (in the next three months).

Chrysler is recalling 469,000 Jeep SUVs worldwide because they can shift into neutral without warning on startup. The recall affects 2005 to 2010 Grand Cherokees and 2006 to 2010 Commanders. U.S. safety regulators say cracks in a circuit board can cause a faulty signal as the SUVs are being started. If the vehicles shift into neutral they can roll away.
