At the end of April, over 60 members attended a breakfast-conference on Fleet Management Policy. The event was an opportunity to encourage the members to get their golf clubs ready, in preparation for the next NAFA event, held annually – the 38th NAFA Quebec Chapter Golf Tournament.
On June 10, the North Central Chapter held their Summer Social/Golf Outing at Edinburg USA Golf Club, Brooklyn Park, MN. It was a great opportunity to meet with peers, do a little networking, and gather on the green.
The New England Chapter took to the water for their annual Summer Outing, cruising on the Seaport Elite II on June 12. Chapter members got a first-hand view of vintage sloops and memorable skylines as they toured the harbor. There was plenty of food and drink for everyone, as well as good fellowship and networking with peers.

Under the direction of NAFA Affiliate Phil Moser, Vice President of Advanced Driver Training Services Inc. (ADTS), the regular tasks of the NAFA Staff were suspended for a day-long driver training course followed by a road test on May 29. The training session was made mandatory with the first day devoted to the individual staff and a second full day given over to family of the staff for a duplicate course.
On July 1 drivers of property carrying commercial motor vehicles will be required to meet the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new hours of service regulations. Also, on Tuesday, June 25, President Barack Obama presented a far-reaching set of proposals, including new fuel economy standards for heavy duty vehicles.
Communauto, a company with a fleet of some 1,200 self-service cars available 24/7, in combination with public transit and active transportation, has launched the first 100 percent electric one-way carsharing service in Canada. Some twenty vehicles are now available for use by citizens.
Anthony Foxx, the young mayor of Charlotte, NC, has been unanimously confirmed to be the new Secretary of Transportation by the U.S. Senate. Foxx, 42, is considered a charismatic rising figure in the Democratic party.
In a letter to Congress, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said it will likely be as late as January 2015 before the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration can finalize rules requiring automakers to install the devices – which many believe could help save hundreds of lives.
Chrysler has issued a statement advising that it "will conduct a voluntary campaign with respect to the vehicles in question that, in addition to a visual inspection of the vehicle will, if necessary, provide an upgrade to the rear structure of the vehicle to better manage crash forces in low-speed impacts." Chrysler's Jeep Liberty is also on the recall list.
GE Capital Fleet Services recently announced the results of its 18th annual fleet passenger car maintenance study, which found that overall fleet car maintenance costs increased by seven percent in 2012 compared to 2011. Although scheduled maintenance costs increased, overall car maintenance costs were down 1.5 percent from 2010 due to vehicle replacement initiatives.
Another specialty automaker has bitten the dust: Carbon Motors filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on June 7. Carbon’s proposal hinged on securing a $310 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy through its Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program. However, the application was denied in March 2012.
