Over 50 toys were collected by the Tri State Chapter in support of the local Toys for Tots campaign, run by the U.S. Marines. The toys were graciously accepted by Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher King and Gunnery Sergeant Joel Couto.

Energy solutions provider Ascent Solutions Inc. has partnered with Sun Country Highway to support their goal to "green" 90 percent of Canada’s highways. In an effort to help assist the province of Ontario with the greening of its highways, Ascent has installed the first public Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging station in St. Thomas and Elgin County.

Joining a growing number of states that are imposing fees on electric and alternative vehicles, Colorado is seeking to recover "lost" gas tax revenues. As of this year, Coloradans driving electric, alternative fuel, and high-efficiency vehicles will pay a $50 registration fee to capture more revenue from vehicles that use less traditional gasoline.

While a few manufacturers have yet to report in, the industry was on track to report its best sales numbers in six years, a welcome relief after the worst industry downturn since the Great Depression. A total of about 15.5 million vehicles were purchased by U.S. motorists in 2013, and forecasts for the coming year range from IHS Automotive’s conservative 16.1 million to as much as 16.5 million or more.

After its initial debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in November, 2013, the hydrogen fuel cell-powered Toyota FCV (fuel cell vehicle) made its first U.S. appearance at Consumer Electronics Show in early January. Along with the car, Toyota brought news about the nation's nascent hydrogen infrastructure.

A new study, "Emerging Technologies: Autonomous Cars — Not If, But When," predicts that by 2035, self-driving cars will account for half the vehicles sold in North America. Worldwide sales will reach about 11.8 million, according to IHS Automotive, which prepared the report.

NAFA was shocked to hear of the passing of former NAFA President J. Paul Hubbard on January 12, in Ste. Rose, PQ, Canada. He served as President from 1989 to 1991. In addition to serving as President, Hubbard held the positions of First Vice President; Second Vice President; Third Vice President; and was the National Board of Delegates Chair and Vice President for Canada. He was one of the first class of inductees to Club NAFA.
