On December 11, following the New England Chapter's annual Roundtable Meeting, a Retirement Roast was held for Greg Asadoorian, Global Fleet Manager, Invensys, Foxboro, MA. Greg was bidding a fond farewell to 32 years in the fleet industry, with 30 of those being at Invensys. Those who know of the old Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts know the "honors" can get pretty brutal, but owing to the respect his peers and friends have for him, Greg got off relatively easy and all had a lot of fun.

Leu Gardens was the backdrop for the "100 Best Fleets in North America Implementing Best Business Practices Forum" on January 23, 2014. While not technically a co-located Sunshine State Chapter meeting, it was included on the NAFA Calendar and drew several NAFA members from the chapter. NAFA chapters see the value in collocating meetings with events that are important to fleet professionals, which make attending the various auto shows around the country a natural choice. On Tuesday, January 28, NAFA Fleet Management Association (NAFA) announced the creation of three new staff positions, as well as the realignment and retitling of many existing staff positions. The changes come after a year-long study of the staffing resources and capacity, and were made to allow the association to provide more and better service to its membership as envisioned in NAFA’s strategic plan.

The Electric Circuit, the largest public charging network for electric vehicles in Québec, has announced the addition of Québec’s first 400-V fast-charge station. The station has been installed at the St-Hubert restaurant in Boucherville and is accessible to drivers of all-electric vehicles with quick-charging capability.

Virginia hybrid-vehicle owners rose up with a collective roar, and on January 16 the commonwealth took a big step toward getting rid of its much-reviled "hybrid tax." Virginia’s House of Delegates voted overwhelmingly to delete a $64 annual license tax imposed last year as part of a breakthrough transportation funding package. The state Senate has passed a comparable bill.

Fiat’s board of directors has adopted a new name, new logo, and new charter as it completes the take over of the Chrysler Group. The board elected to establish Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., which will be chartered in the Netherlands, as the parent company of the Group. FCA’s common shares will be listed on stock exchanges in New York and Milan.

Ford Motor Co. is recalling 4,532 2011 model-year E-150, E-250, E-350, and E-450 vans and work truck chassis because the windshield may be prone to the formation of bubbles that can hinder driver visibility, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported.

The skimming devices, placed on card readers at gas station pumps throughout the southern U.S., recorded credit and debit card data, as well as PINs, which the thieves then used to withdraw more than $2 million from ATMs. They then tried to launder the money through at least 70 different bank accounts, according to the district attorney’s office in New York County.

Fleet management company LeasePlan Corporation N.V. officially launched LeasePlan Canada (LPCA) on January 30. In November 2013, LeasePlan announced that it would expand its North American service offering to include Canada. LPCA provides a full spectrum of services. It has signed contracts with their first client and expects to have their first vehicle on the road shortly.

Donlen Corp. is developing a relationship with compressed natural gas (CNG) supplier VNG.CO to give its customers access to their network of CNG refueling sites. VNG.CO recently inked a similar CNG-fueling arrangement with PHH Arval.

FedEx has one of the largest alternative-fueled vehicle fleets in the world. Soon, the delivery giant will put 20 electric delivery trucks on the road with hydrogen fuel-cell range extenders designed by fuel-cell developer Plug Power. The project--which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy--will make FedEx's electric delivery trucks capable of a wide variety of tasks.

NAFA was saddened to learn of the passing of Linda Taylor, Fleet Manager for the Diebold Corporation until late-2013. She was 62. Linda passed away on January 29, after a long battle with cancer, in her home in Louisville, KY. A longtime Member of NAFA, Linda joined in 1984 and was a true friend to the Association. Linda was a Diebold employee for 44 years. She had oversight of a fleet of over 3,500 vehicles for the company, a provider of ATM technology for the banking industry.
