A tremendous turnout of over 65 NAFA Members and Affiliates came out to learn from Houston-based Attorney John E. Cruickshank, from the law firm Alaniz and Schraeder, L.L.P. He spoke on the topic of "The Emergence of Vehicle Technology and Legal Risks." The Chapter also held its annual elections. After lunch Chapter Members toured the Auto Show floor to view all the great new models up close.

On February 11, the Federal Minister of Finance, the Honourable Jim Flaherty, presented the 2014 federal budget. This budget commits to no new taxes for Canadian Families and businesses, and reduces tariffs on a number of goods. The budget also has a renewed focus on consumer issues, including targeting Canada-U.S. pricing differences and eliminating a number of consumer billing costs. Also, the City of Fredericton has installed an electric vehicle (EV) charging station. This latest initiative showcases commitment and progress in NB Power’s two-year EV demonstration project, Shift Your Ride.

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller warned automakers and technology executives that he'll propose regulating in-car use of mobile phones to Internet-connected entertainment systems unless they do more to reduce driver distractions. The influential U.S. Senator told officials of various companies to move faster on implementing standards for in-car technology use.

According to figures released in early-February by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) almost 22 million vehicles recalled last year in 632 recalls. That figure compares with nearly 16.4 million vehicles recalled in 2012 in 581 actions and is the highest number since 2004, when recalled vehicles hit 30.8 million.

After years of study, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in early-February it will begin taking steps that could eventually require all new cars and trucks to be equipped with so-called vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V, technology, calling it a "key" to saving lives while also improving traffic flow in major urban areas.

The Mississippi Senate passed a bill on February 5 that would make texting and driving against the law. The ban would only affect texting with handheld phones. Voice-to-text systems would remain legal. The law for careless driving says drivers will be punished by a fine between $5 and $50. Similarly, the City of Austin, TX’s Public Safety Commission voted on February 3 to ask the City Council to form a task force to explore additional ways to crack down on distracted driving.

Police agencies in Northeast Ohio switched in the last three years from mostly using the Ford Crown Victoria to smaller, more powerful cars that manufacturers modified from their two-door muscle car counterparts. After Ford stopped making the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, car companies started updating their cruisers to model muscle cars, like the Dodge Charger.

On Tuesday, January 28, NAFA Fleet Management Association (NAFA) announced the creation of three new staff positions, as well as the realignment and retitling of many existing staff positions. The changes come after a year-long study of the staffing resources and capacity, and were made to allow the association to provide more and better service to its membership as envisioned in NAFA’s strategic plan.

John Higginson has been hired by Wheels, Inc. to be their new Chief Technology Officer. He joined the company on January 2.
